A special treat for my 50 Perfect Stranger project this time around – a genuine Country Music Star!!
A couple of years ago, I was driving along and the radio was playing in the background, Terry Wogan no less. I wasn’t
really listening to it, nothing against Terry, I just had other things on my mind. That is until I heard a singer who’s voice
really stood out and made me notice them. I’d never really considered myself a massive country fan before, although
I do believe that Johnny Cash could do no wrong musically!!. The singer was Lindi Ortega, and ever since then, I’ve
bought her new albums off iTunes and practically worn them out, if that’s possible with an MP3. She’s definitely country
music, but there’s a lot more too it than that, it’s a more modern take on country. To be fair, in the UK, we don’t get
exposed to a lot of music like this, and I think that many people still can’t shake the image of Kenny Rogers or Dolly
Parton, or if they do, it’s only to replace it with Billy Ray Cyrus. Let’s be honest,Country music isn’t massive over here.
For those people who’s image of country music needs a little moderisation, of which I was one up until a couple of years
ago, I couldn’t recommend Lindi Ortega enough. Get over to Youtube and do a search for her – there’s a whole load of her
own material on there, as well as some brilliant cover versions. If someone told me that I’d ever like a cover version of
‘Ring of Fire’ a couple of years ago, I’d never have believed them – have a listen to this though.
So, that brings us to last night. Lindi was playing in Leeds at the Wardrobe. Fiona & I went along & I was hoping to get
some good Live shots, there’s a few of them below. We listened to a fantastic set of live music, including Ring of Fire
(Which made me very happy – I’ve heard a few covers of it before, this is the only one I like). Then right at the end, I
figured I’d be cheeky – how could such a night be finished in any better way than getting a shot of Lindi for my
50 Perfect Strangers project? It couldn’t & she was more than happy to do it! The result is my favourite so far.
I Know she’s got a few more dates in the UK:
January 30th 2014 – The Garage, London
January 31st 2014 – Thekla, Bristol
February 1st 2014 – The Haunt, Brighton
If you can make it to one of these nights, you should – I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
