About Me, Mark Hillyer – Leeds Wedding Photographer
I don’t think anyone feels truly comfortable writing about themselves but let me tell you the important bits about myself, how I got started, why I love what I do, where I live etc. and then if we meet up for a consultation, Engagement Shoot, Wedding or Portrait, you’ll be well prepared.
For as long as I can remember I’ve loved photography. I can even remember where it all started – My Grandparents wedding anniversary party. My dad gave me his camera and sent me off to take photographs of various family members who were there, no doubt to keep me quiet. The following birthday I asked for a 110 camera and that was it. I was hooked.
Since then, I’ve studied Photography which then enabled me to spend 10 years travelling the world as a Cruise Ship Photographer. It was probably one of the best jobs available for someone who likes meeting new people, seeing new places and photographing them all. That’s where I discovered my interest in the story telling aspect of photography and the power of a still image to convey a memory or a moment in time. I love all forms of photography, but specifically documentary photography. Don’t get me wrong, I can still appreciate a stunning landscape photograph and when there’s a sunset, I’ll almost certainly have my camera out, but the aspect of it all that I get really excited about is when there’s a story that you can see in the photograph, something that the viewer can take away from the image that tells them about the people in it. I’ll talk a bit more about that in the ‘My Style‘ section.
Now, I live in Yorkshire, just between York and Leeds, with my fantastic wife, Fiona, who might be the one who answers your email if you get in touch, because we work together, Fiona takes care of the business side and I take care of the photography, just don’t ever ask who’s the boss… We also celebrated a new addition to our family recently and here she is…
A few other random things you might want to know about me:
- I’m just becoming a cyclist after years of being a runner, I’m not sure how I feel about Lycra yet though.
- I love Japanese stationary and nearly always write everything down in at least one pristine, art-paper filled, leather covered notebook.
- For my personal work I shoot on film and quite often post the results on the Blog, Facebook or my Instagram account, I love the process of shooting film, how it slows you down a bit and really makes you consider the image and what you’re capturing in the camera. Also, film just looks so good.
- I name all of my cameras.
