Laura & Oliver’s Wedding at The Windmill, Ampleforth
One of the great parts of my job is that I get to visit some really beautiful locations. Throughout Yorkshire and beyond I’ve really been lucky enough to shoot in some of the best stately homes, manor houses, hotels & halls. I’d have to say that my favourite location for bride preparation photographs though, is the brides home. There’s nothing better to really get a feel for who a person is, than being in the home where they grew up, surrounded by history & photographs of them through various points and milestones in life. That was certainly the case on the morning of Laura and Oli’s wedding in Ampleforth.
If you don’t know where Ampleforth is, it’s a beautiful little stone built village on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, between York and Helmsley. You really couldn’t ask for a better setting for a wedding and that’s where we started the day, at Laura’s parents house. When I arrived, Laura was extremely calm, sat at the table having a mug of tea. I had concerns that I’d got the wrong day. But, after a lot of coffee, and breakfast, the bridesmaids started to arrive and that’s about when it started to feel like the morning of a wedding day.
The Windmill Pub is a little bit out of Ampleforth, so while some of the guests drove to the reception, some took the opportunity to enjoy the walk. It wasn’t a cold day, although there were some ominous cloud formations on the horizon. And so to the serious business of speeches – the Bride made one too, that should catch on. More Brides should make speeches.
As afternoon turned to evening, everyone migrated from the Marquee outside, to the pub. Entertainment for the evening was provided by a friends of Laura & Oli’s band, Holy Moly & The Crackers. Now that was a band that knew how to fill the dance floor. Something a little bit different too if you’re after more Folky, but VERY lively Folk, musical entertainment.
So that’s pretty much how it stayed, dance floor packed, people having fun into the late night.
As I said earlier, I get to visit beautiful places.
