Skipton Wedding Photographer | Ellie & Christian at Newton Grange

Bridge over the canal

Last week found me heading out to Newton Grange near Skipton to shoot some Pre-Wedding Portraits of Ellie & Christian.  When I set off, the sun was out and it was a beautiful, sunny & frosty February morning.  As I climbed towards Skipton though, the mist slowly crept in.  Initially I was a bit concerned that it might not look so great taking photographs in the fog.  I needn’t have worried though as I love the photographs and the fog really gave us something that we (hopefully) won’t have when I shoot their wedding there later in the year.

Newton Grange is a brilliant venue.  The write up on their website describes it as a rural retreat and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe it.  It’s a fantastic old farmhouse that’s been converted to a guest house and sits in the most idyllic countryside at the end of a tiny lane just outside Skipton in Yorkshire. It was so peaceful there. On the one side of it are rolling fields as far as you can see ( to be fair, that was about 20 metres in the fog! ), and then on the other side is the tranquil canal, which on this occasion was frozen, locking the canal boats in their moorings.

I learned three new things on this shoot. Firstly, that skimming stones on a frozen canal not only allows you to achieve a new stone skimming high score, but it makes a fantastic noise. Secondly, walking alongside a frozen canal and smelling the wood smoke from the canal barges’ stoves is possibly one of the best ways to start a day. Finally, Ellie’s dad took some brilliant pictures of us all while I was shooting & I have considerably more grey hair than I thought!

Today was a bit of a combination shoot in that I used both film and digital.  Some of the shots (the square ones) were shot on a Bronica SQ-A using Fuji film and developed by the ever brilliant UKFilm Lab.
