My Favourite Images – a Review of 2017
I started off wanting to put together a ‘ best of’ Yorkshire Wedding Photographer review of 2017. When I sat down and put a collection of images together, my favourites were totally different to Fiona’s. Everyone would make a completely different selection. So I went back to square one and created a different sort of collection.
It occurred to me that I should approach my yearly review in the same way that I wanted my Brides & Grooms to look at their wedding photographs. I wanted a group of images that may not necessarily be critically my best images, but that meant something to me. The images that made me remember the people and places & the weddings that they were shot at. So, that’s pretty much what this is. A collection of my favourite natural moments. Most of them are completely unposed and even the portraits are as relaxed as i could make them. It’s how I like to work, so it’s how this collection should be.
I try to work as naturally as possible, staying in the background, as unobtrusive as I can be at 6ft tall. Capturing the real moments that happen as they actually happen. Capturing the real-time interactions between people. I do shoot some portraits of the bride and groom, there’s some in the images below. I also shoot some family groups. My main focus is on capturing the natural though.
I prefer to tell the story of the day. The whole day. I don’t believe you can tell a story of the biggest day in someone’s life, and leave after the first dance, before it’s all ended.
This review may or may not contain some of my best shots of the year, but it definitely does contain the images with memories attached to them. These are the photographs that remind me of a moment in time, something someone said, the way the light came through the curtains, a smell, something that for whatever reason, burrowed into my memory. That’s how I want people to look at my work. A collection of real and natural memories rather than a collection of photographs.
